Feel the Burn was a whole new meaning after my time at the festival.

Burn Bright at Burning Man.

Design. Dust. DJs. Dust. Dildos. Dust. Doers. More Dust.

It all happened by accident. A friend of mine in Barcelona messaged me saying that a friend of his had two Burning Man tickets. As I was already planning to be home and in the area, and spending time with my brother, I messaged him to say how about Burning Man? Before I had even finalised picking up the tickets somewhere in LA, my brilliant brother had already lined up what I dubbed “Chez Charles” – a camper and Toyota Tacoma combo – and all the required fixings for Burning Man.

Look, for those of you who think Burning Man is just another music or art festival think again. It has a purpose, a theme, and a philosophy. It’s all about community and celebrating your unique talents, plus people sharing, enjoying and collaborating with your unique talents.  Or as Wikipedia says,

experiment in community and art, influenced by ten main principles: “radical” inclusion, self-reliance, and self-expression, as well as community cooperation, civic responsibility, gifting, decommodification, participation, immediacy, and leaving no trace.

And even with 70,000 people in attendance this year, the theme still remains true, despite some more commercialisation and capitalisation. I mean, hey it is America after all.

What’s cool is driving  (unless you’re driving something neon, slow and fucking cool) is totally banned. Biking is the best method of getting around this amazing city of mini-communities.

And you can see in the video, dust masks and goggles come in handy. And they must be stylish.

The designs and art pieces were mind-bendingly awesome.

Cue the DRAGON!

What struck me most is outside of the core people who are totally into the theme of Burning Man, and the core ethos of Burning Man, there’s a huge offshoot of repressed office drones and suburb dwellers who seem to be using the experience to, for 9 days, pretty much liberate themselves from societal repression. I witnessed a group of declared “housewives” from an undisclosed California suburb who were excited to be lined up to fuck a lesbian strapped with a giant dildo. And dildos seemed to be a big theme at Burning Man. Classes on techniques, positions and more were all over the city, and not just confined to one “camp” or one “community”.  Hey, whatever floats your boat, and I’m not judging at all, but maybe the country should take a step back and examine how they live the other 350+ days a year.

Gastro Burning Man was such a treat. The food, the techniques, and the breakfasts were just absolutely fantabulous. You can see more on my Facebook page, and more is coming to Instagram.

If you haven’t been to Burning Man, and you’re like me and into new experiences, you have to go, at least once. The Burning Man, on the last day, is a such a cathartic sight to see, especially with my brother, the aspiring mobile hotelier. Just be sure to be prepared for more Dust than a Mad Max movie. My last tip? Get in a few miles on a bike before you go, or you’ll be dealing with sore ass muscles for the following week after from all that biking 🙂
